While South Florida experiences a different type of autumn than most of the country, we still delight in the spirit of the season! This month, The District is pleased to present intriguing events such as the Spirits of Stranahan House Halloween Tour, “Havana Nights: Celebrating Architect Francis Abreu” at the History Museum Fort Lauderdale, and much more. If you love hands-on art projects, or simply enjoy admiring art, join NSU Art Museum on Thursday, Oct. 6 for the Free First Thursdays Starry Night, presented by PNC Bank. From 4–8 p.m., guests will receive free admission to the museum, plus 2-for-1 specials on wine and craft beer, light bites in the Museum Café, free admission to exhibitions, and hands-on art projects for all ages. This event takes place the first Thursday of every month.
Discover a behind-the-scenes view of Bonnet House Museum & Gardens’ three orchid grow areas on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m.–noon. during the Orchid Greenhouse Tour. Holding approximately 1,500 orchids are the Display House, North Greenhouse and Lath House. Pre-registration is required at Bonnethouse.org or (954) 703-2606. $20 per person.
Celebrating Preservation 50, Hispanic Heritage Month, and the opening of the 55th anniversary year of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, the Thursday, Oct. 13 “Havana Nights: Celebrating Architect Francis Abreu” is certain to be a treat! From 6–8 p.m., enjoy Caribbean fare and signature mojitos, while admiring a private exhibition of Abreu sketches and designs from the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society collections. Members of the Abreu family from Atlanta will be joining the celebration. $45–$55 per person.
Get ready for some Brazilian pop music! On Tuesday, Oct. 18, Caetano Veloso, the legendary Brazilian pop superstar who headlined at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, will take the stage at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. He’ll deliver his distinct sound that merges rock, reggae, fado, tango, samba, forró and rap. The special guest is Teresa Cristina. $30–$75 per ticket.
Learn the dark secrets of the spirits who linger within the Stranahan House at the Spirits of Stranahan House Halloween Tour, Friday, Oct. 28–Monday, Oct. 31, 7 p.m. Join Victorian mourners and the grave keeper himself at the Historic Stranahan House Museum for fascinating tales of South Florida’s haunted history. Advance registration required. $25 per person.
Mark your calendar for Florida Grand Opera’s 75th season! Don’t miss the audience favorite “Carmen” on Dec. 1 & Dec. 3, 2016; Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” Feb. 9 & Feb. 11, 2017; and Giuseppe Verdi’s “Un ballo in maschera” (“A Masked Ball”) May 11 & May 13, 2017.
