June is hot, hot, hot with extraordinary cultural and historical activities at the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District. Whether you’d like to get away with the “Segway to the Riverside Hotel” package, hop on to see “Chuggington Live! The Great Rescue Adventure” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, or take in some captivating photography depicting Haiti’s history, The District is offering countless fun-filled activities in June. If you’re planning a visit to Fort Lauderdale or a local looking for some great activities, following is just a sample of what you can enjoy this month at The District:

Desiring an overnight getaway for two filled with Fort Lauderdale history and a chic hotel stay? Check out the “Segway to the Riverside Hotel” package, available now through Sept. 30, 2015. The package includes “rolling” into Fort Lauderdale’s history on a Segway, and an overnight stay at the stylish and historic Riverside Hotel on Las Olas Blvd, only minutes from the beach and limitless cultural activities.

The Segway to the Riverside Hotel package includes:

  • Double occupancy accommodations in a deluxe room
  • Heart of Fort Lauderdale Segway Tours for two with complimentary admission to tour the Fort Lauderdale History Center campus and unique exhibits
  • Two drinks of guests’ choice at the Riverside Hotel
  • Complimentary overnight valet parking

Package rates start at $259 per night based on double occupancy, excluding taxes and service charges (a savings of $130 per night over booking package items separately).

Are you an orchid lover? Then the Orchid Greenhouse Tour at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens on Tuesday, June 9 at 11 a.m. will be the perfect opportunity for you to view and learn about these wondrous flowers. Offered the second Tuesday of each month from 11 a.m. to noon for $20 per person, the tour is led by the Bonnet House orchid curator, who shows guests around the greenhouses and discusses how orchids are bred and cultivated (including the impressive seedling program). Limited reservations available; pre-registration is required.

Storytelling isn’t just for kids. At the Historic Stranahan House Museum’s Stranahan Stories presentation on Monday, June 15 at 11 a.m., Dr. Michele Williams of the Florida Public Archaeology Network will utilize historic images to teach guests more about the history of Fort Lauderdale’s greatest natural resource – the New River. Also on June 15, 2-for-1 (buy one, get one free) guided tours of Stranahan House will be available at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. For more information, call 954-524-4736.

Choo-choo! The kids can put on their conductor hats for “Chuggington Live! The Great Rescue Adventure” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, June 20 at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The trainees are on their first day of advanced training, and are eager to impress their mentors by mastering new roles that test their courage, speed and determination. $15–$85 per ticket.

The history of Haiti is purely fascinating, and it can be viewed through NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s new exhibition “From Within and Without: The History of Haitian Photography,” opening Sunday, June 21. On Thursday, June 25, guests can enjoy a panel discussion with exhibition curator and artist Edouard Duval-Carrié and exhibition artists at 6 p.m., and a free reception, open to the public from 7–9 p.m. On view through Oct. 4, 2015, the exhibition explores the history of Haiti through more than 350 images depicting its people and culture, from the late 19th century to the present. RSVP required. For more information, email or call 954-262-0204.
