Summer may be winding down, but the array of activities offered in August at the Riverwalk A&E District Fort Lauderdale is in full gear! The colorful and impressionist landscapes painted by artist Tim Forman will be on display at History Fort Lauderdale ― open daily, noon–4 p.m. on weekdays and 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. weekends ― throughout August. Free with museum admission.
Indulge yourself in delicious Sonoma wines and light bites at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s Thursday, Aug. 1, 6 p.m. The Art of Wine and Food: “Summer in Sonoma.” Arrive early at 5:30 p.m. and enjoy a docent-led tour of the highlights of the “Remember to React” exhibition. $30–$40 per person. Learn how to master the care of orchids at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens’ August Orchid Care classes. On Saturday, Aug. 10, enjoy the Orchid Care Basics class; and on Saturday, Aug. 17, try the Repotting and Mounting class. Both classes take place from 10 a.m.–noon and cover many aspects of basic orchid care to transplanting, with emphasis on techniques and the use of different materials including cork, driftwood, plaques, baskets and mounting on trees. $30–$35 per class.
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival is the Sunday, Aug. 18 Hippiefest 2019 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the show is hosted by Sha Na Na founding member Henry Gross, and features Ten Years After, Big Brother & the Holding Company and Vanilla Fudge. $49–$69 per ticket.
Would you like to experience a delightful happy hour while learning about how Fort Lauderdale’s first lady, Ivy Stranahan, challenged the status quo? Attend the Tuesday, Aug. 20, 5:30–7:30 p.m. History Happy Hour: The Civic Activism of Ivy Stranahan. Enjoy a glass of featured wine while you join local historian and Broward County Schools educator Michelle Sammartino to dive into Ivy’s civic and social activism, and the role she played in the creation of numerous Fort Lauderdale organizations. $10–$15 per person.
Rock out at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at The B-52s 40th Anniversary Tour with Special Guests OMD and Berlin. Renowned as the World’s Greatest Party Band, the B-52’s timeless hits include “Rock Lobster,” “Private Idaho,” “Love Shack” and “Roam.” $59.50–$129.50 per ticket.
