March is abloom with many beautiful things, including the exciting activities at the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District! From fantastic performances by Florida Grand Opera’s Young Artists; the incredible theatrics, dancing, circus acts and rock music of “Pilobolus Shadowland;” to the Mad Hatter’s tea party, the blissful activities at The District this month are not to be missed! Following are just a few of the events to take place in March:
The sweet melodies of the Florida Grand Opera’s Young Artists will float through the air on Sunday, March 5 at 6 p.m. and Friday, March 31 at 7:30 pm at SongFest Broward inside the intimate Leiser Opera Center Fort Lauderdale, located along the banks of the New River. Presented by Florida Grand Opera, this free event will highlight “Songs of the Americas” on March 5 and “Italian Masters” on March 31. The event is free and open to the public, and seating is first come, first served, but reservations are required.
Attendees can celebrate beautiful art and support the preservation of Bonnet House during the “Making New Impressions: A Juried Art Competition & Auction” on Thursday, March 9, 6 p.m. at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. The event will include art, music, cocktails and spring moonlight. A jury will select first, second and third place winners; the artist with the most votes by attendees will receive the People’s Choice Award. All artwork selected for the competition is for sale, and 50 percent of proceeds will help support Bonnet House’s preservation. $50 per person.
It’s shadow theater! It’s dance! It’s a circus and rock concert! It’s “Pilobolus Shadowland” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, March 16 at 8 p.m. This surreal story of a girl’s coming of age is “Alice in Wonderland” meets “Cirque Du Soleil.” $29.50–$99.50 per ticket.
Don’t be late for the very important Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Historic Stranahan House Museum on Saturday, March 18 from 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Alice and her friends will be on-site, where guests will enjoy finger sandwiches, sweet treats, raffles and entertainment on the grounds of Fort Lauderdale’s most historic home. $25 per adult, $15 per child (12 and under). In honor of the 106th anniversary of Fort Lauderdale’s incorporation, the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society will honor Brightline (Railway) and its president, Michael Reininger at the Monday, March 27 History Makers Event, 6–10 p.m. Attendees will enjoy cocktails, great food and dancing under the stars at the New River Inn. $75 per person. English high tea and opera will merge at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, March 29 during the Tea and Opera event at 2:30 p.m. High tea will be followed by a performance by Florida Grand Opera Young Artists, featuring music inspired by the exhibition “Catherine Opie: 700 Nimes Road.” Limited seating. $30–$36 per person for Tea and Opera; $12 per person for the performance only.
