Lecture: The Movement: Bob Adelman and Civil Rights Era Photography

Photographer Bob Adelman has photographed cover stories for countless magazines, including Esquire, Time, People, Life, New York, Harper’s Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, and Paris Match. He has photographed or written more than a dozen books and produced countless others. His most recent book is “King: The Photobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.” (Abrams, 2004). An award-winning photographer, Adelman has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, an NEA grant, and several Art Directors Club Awards. His photographs have been exhibited at the Smithsonian, the American Federation of Arts, and several other institutions. They are included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Adelman has taught at The Center of Photography at Woodstock, The New School, and School of Visual Arts. He currently lives in Miami Beach. Cost is $10 per person, including museum admission. Sailing the Air: Aeronautics in Fort Lauderdale Exhibit

Most would agree that flying is still an amazing experience, and that it is undeniably one of the most innovative advancements in history. This exhibit explores how the innovation of aviation has deep roots in Fort Lauderdale. The exhibit will run through May 18 in the Lucy Bryan Room located at the New River Inn.

Las Olas Art Fair

Bold and vibrant paintings, contemporary and whimsical art, life-size sculptures, photography and jewelry are among the original works of art that transform Las Olas Boulevard into an outdoor art gallery three times a year. The Las Olas Art Fairs ranked among the top art festivals in the country by Sunshine Artist magazine. These premier juried shows are highly anticipated by locals and tourists alike for the vast array of art on display and for sale. Admission is free.

Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design opens October 12, and runs through January 20, 2014. Home to a permanent collection of more than 6,000 works, Nova Southeastern University’s Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale collections include significant pieces by the American painter William Glackens, artists of the Northern European Cobra Movement and contemporary Cuban artists. There’s also always something new and different at the Museum. Exhibitions span time and genre – including Warhol and Cars: American Icons, Wari: Pre-Inca Lords of Peru and Foto Fort Lauderdale, an exciting new series of high-caliber photographic exhibitions that give photography a permanent, year-round home at the Museum.

Guided Tours of the Historic Stranahan House Museum

Martin Z. Margulies is one of the world’s leading collectors. He is also one of the most-prominent figures in Miami’s art world. The Golda and Meyer Marks Collection at Nova Southeastern University’s Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale is home to one of the largest Cobra collections in America.
