Moms, Memorial Day and many more wonderful things are celebrated in May, and the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District is offering its own exciting lineup of events, perfect for a special occasion or simply enjoying the good things in life. From the Girlfriends & Glamour Getaway package to a performance by Idina Menzel, The District is presenting many aMAYzing offerings this month.

Take in the beautiful May weather while cruising the New River, and hear captivating urban legends and tales of residents no longer living, during Historic Stranahan House Museum’s River Ghost Tours. Held most Sundays at 7:30 p.m., the tours include a 30-minute tour inside the museum, and an hour-long boat ride on the New River. $25 per person. Call to confirm availability. Advance registration required by 2:30 p.m. on Sundays.

Celebrate the special ladies in your life during the Sunday, May 7 Mother’s Day @FTLhistory event, with the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. From 11 a.m.–2 p.m., guests will enjoy complimentary special art, crafts and tours throughout the day with admission.

On Thursday, May 11 and Saturday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the stage will be set for “A Masked Ball,” presented by Florida Grand Opera. This incredible opera is one of Giuseppe Verdi’s great achievements and a can’t-miss event. Each program is accompanied by a pre-show lecture an hour before curtain, with a talk-back session immediately following the performance. $21–$200 per person.

For those who love art, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is presenting an Art Talk and opening reception for “Some Aesthetic Decisions: A Centennial Celebration of Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain.” The Art Talk, “Why is this Art?” with Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator for NSU Museum of Art, will take place at 5 p.m. The opening reception will be held from 6–8 p.m. The exhibition includes works by many artists in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Dada artist Marcel Duchamp’s forever changing of the nature of art, when he anonymously submitted a porcelain urinal titled “Fountain” to the Society of Independent Artists exhibition in New York. What’s better than a beautiful May day, discovering how to attract more butterflies and birds into your yard? On Sunday, May 21 from 2–5 p.m. at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, guests will enjoy “Gardening for Birds & Butterflies,” a class including information on the basics of wildlife gardening and specific plants that attracts these beautiful creatures, and a walk around the garden. $20 for members; $25 for non-members.

Let It Go! Idina Menzel, Tony Award® winner and Broadway icon, will take the stage at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, May 24 at 8 p.m. The voice of Elsa in Disney’s global box office smash “Frozen,” in which she sings the Oscar®-winning song “Let It Go”; and known for her performances in “RENT,” “Wicked,” film, TV, cast albums and her own solo albums, Menzel is not to be missed. $69–$189 per ticket.
