Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie … and Riverwalk A&E Fort Lauderdale! In July, we celebrate the birth of the good ol’ USA, and The District is offering exciting activities that embody the culture, history and recreation that people in our country are so fortunate to enjoy. Whether it’s a summer walking tour through Fort Lauderdale’s storied past, a beautiful tribute to Whitney Houston, or a boat ride down the New River on a paddlewheel boat, this month’s activities at Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk should not be missed by local and visitors alike! Following is a sample of what’s happening this month:
On July 5 from 4–8 p.m., everyone is invited to participate in an artistic experience at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s Free First Thursdays Starry Nights. This event includes free museum admission, 2-for-1 specials on wine and craft beer, light bites in the Museum Café, free admission to art exhibitions, hands-on art projects for all ages, and much more.
Fort Lauderdale Historical Society’s Summer Walking Tours are a wonderful way to take a trip through Fort Lauderdale’s intriguing history. On Friday mornings in July from 9–11 a.m., attendees will enjoy a tour of old Fort Lauderdale, and stories of communities that lived along the New River from prehistoric times to the 1920s. Afterward, they will be treated to lemonade and admission to History Fort Lauderdale’s main museum, King Cromartie House and Schoolhouse Museum. $20 per person.
On Friday evenings in July at 7:30 p.m., Ghost Tours at the Historic Stranahan House Museum entice guests into the stories of the lives and deaths of those who live in the house. The interactive tour, which allows access to the full house, includes dowsing rods and photographs. $20 per person.
“The Greatest Love of All: The Whitney Houston Show” will take the stage at Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, July 13 at 8 p.m. Celebrating the legendary Whitney Houston through her greatest hits, the show features South African songstress Belinda Davids accompanied by a 6-piece live band and dancers. $20–$105.55 per ticket.
What better way is there to experience the beauty of the New River than Cruisin’ Down the River with Bonnet House Museum & Gardens? On Saturday, July 21 at 5 p.m., guests will ride on the famous Carrie B paddlewheel boat, and enjoy wine and delicious treats from Kelly’s Landing, as well as live music from the Gold Coast Banjo Band. $45–$55 per person.
