As we say “Happy Birthday” to America this month, Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District is sparkling with exciting events. Whether you enjoy “Cruisin’ Down the River” on the Carrie B paddlewheel boat or laugh-out-loud political comedy with The Capitol Steps, The District offers something fun for everyone. Following are just a few examples of activities you can enjoy at The District in July:
Do you love art? Even better, do you enjoy admiring art for free? Then check out the Free First Thursday Starry Nights, presented by PNC Bank at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, July 7 from 5–8 p.m. This event includes complimentary museum admission to all of the exhibitions, 2-for-1 wine and craft beer specials, light bites in the Museum Café, drawings for prizes and hands-on art projects for all ages. This event takes place the first Thursday of every month.
Take a cruise through Fort Lauderdale’s history with Bonnet House Museum & Gardens on Saturday, July 9 at 5 p.m. during Cruisin’ Down the River: Wine and Whimsical Tales. Hop on the famous Carrie B paddlewheel boat to hear amusing tales about Fort Lauderdale’s New River and Florida’s powerhouse port, Port Everglades, while enjoying wine and delicious treats from Kelly’s Landing. Featured speakers include retired Port Everglades pilot Ned Cray, and Carrie B narrator Johnny Basile. $55 for members; $45 for members.
A U.S. Navy ship is designated to be named in honor of Fort Lauderdale’s nautical history! Come learn about the USS Fort Lauderdale on Monday, July 11, 6 p.m. at Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. The free event will be presented by National Director of the Navy League of the U.S. Chuck Black, who will share the latest information and insights regarding construction of this new amphibious transportation dock vessel.
From Thursday July 28–Sunday, July 31 (various showtimes), enjoy unlimited laughs at The Capitol Steps’ “What to Expect When You’re Electing” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The strictly limited engagement features presidential candidates — Hillary, Ted, Bernie, Donald and more — coming out of the woodwork to unleash their candidacy on an already suspecting public. $39 per person.
Boo! During Historic Stranahan House Museum’s River Ghost Tours, offered on most Sundays, you can enjoy exhilarating tales of Fort Lauderdale’s history while cruising down the Intracoastal Waterway on a Water Taxi. Hear the stories of residents who are no longer living, as well as some urban legends. The tour includes 30 minutes inside the Historic Stranahan House Museum and an hourlong boat ride on the New River. $25 per person.
The Florida Grand Opera is getting ready for its 75th season! Mark your calendar for the audience favorite “Carmen” on Dec. 1 & Dec. 3, 2016; Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” Feb. 9 & Feb. 11, 2017; and Giuseppe Verdi’s “Un ballo in maschera” (“A Masked Ball”) May 11 & May 13, 2017.
