Experiencing memorable events is one of the best holiday gifts, and at the Riverwalk A&E District Fort Lauderdale, there is so much to partake in throughout the month of December. Whether it’s Holiday Magic at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, Slow Burn Theatre Co’s “A Christmas Story, The Musical” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, or Holiday River Tours at the Historic Stranahan House Museum, The District’s activities are sure to provide some spirited excitement for everyone.
Whether you’re a visitor to the area looking for things to do in Fort Lauderdale, or a local seeking out some fun-filled activities, The District is offering many December events. Following is just a sample of what’s happening this month.
Kick off the month with Free First Thursdays presented by AutoNation on Thursday, Dec. 5 at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. From 4–8 p.m., you can view the museum’s current exhibitions and participate in drop-in art workshops for all ages. Plus, enjoy 2-for-1 drinks in the Museum Café. Free and open to the public.
Holiday Magic at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is an enchanting event that is not to be missed! Taking place Friday, Dec. 6–Friday, Dec. 13, Holiday Magic begins with the home and estate’s 100th anniversary, the Holiday Magic Soiree, on Dec. 6. A line-up of special evening events throughout the week include the Pride Jazz Ensemble, Whimsical Wonderland – An Evening for Families, Dillard Jazz Trio, Yuletide Carolers, and Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. Free–$100.
On Saturday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m.–noon, the entire family can enjoy Cookies with Santa, and take a photo with the big guy himself! $25 for a family of four; $10 for each additional child or adult. Advance registration required.
It’s Light Up Holiday by History Fort Lauderdale! On Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1918, residents and visitors are invited to commemorate the date of Dec. 10, 1918, when Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale received its first streetlights powered by the Bryan Electric Company. The event will feature wine, hors d’oeuvres and sweet treats, along with traditional holiday decorations and sounds of the season. Free–$25 per person.
Step into the ultimate girls’ night out at Holidays with the Housewives on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Dolores Catania (New Jersey), Ramona Singer (New York) and Kelly Dodd (Orange County) will share festive season memories. $37–$87 per ticket.
Don’t poke your eye out! Slow Burn Theatre Co presents “A Christmas Story, The Musical” from Friday, Dec. 13–Sunday, Dec. 29, matinee and evening performances. $49–$65 per ticket.
The Historic Stranahan House Museum continues its popular holiday tradition, Stranahan House Holiday River Tours, Monday, Dec. 16–Monday Dec. 23. With tours starting at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., guests can view Fort Lauderdale’s oldest home in beautiful Victorian Christmas décor, and experience an evening House tour with costumed tour guides, live music, photo opportunities and more. Included is a relaxing cruise down the New River, where guests can take in the beautiful holiday light displays of the city’s waterfront homes. $35 per person. Advance registration required.
Throughout December, the exhibition “Patchwork Mosaic: An Indigenous Gathering of Seminole Masterworks” will be on display at History Fort Lauderdale. In its second year as an Art Basel-sanctioned event venue, History Fort Lauderdale presents a retrospective of contemporary and traditional Seminole and Miccosukee Tribal Native American multi-media art and presentations. Open daily noon 4–p.m. weekdays, and 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. on weekends. Free with museum admission.
At NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale throughout December, “I Paint My Reality: Surrealism in Latin America” will be on view. This new exhibition examines the manifestation of the Surrealism Movement in Latin America, including art by Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Wifredo Lam and many others. Free–$12.
