Although summer is sizzling in South Florida, Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District is playing it cool with many fun-filled events in June. From The District’s Heritage Tours to “Heathers The Musical” and wine tastings, there are unlimited opportunities for locals and visitors alike to enjoy cultural activities. Check out this sample of the refreshing events taking place in The District this month:
Looking for a “waterful” way to discover Fort Lauderdale and its history? Then The District’s Heritage Tours, available now through Sept. 30, 2016, are perfect for you. Explore two or three historical heritage sites while hopping on and off of the Water Taxi as you please. Plus, take advantage of special discounts and offers from area restaurants and merchants, and heritage site gift shops; plus receive a $300 savings book from The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale mall. Only $38 per adult and $26 per child aged 6–12; free for children aged 6 and under. Admission to an optional third site is available for a nominal extra charge.
Be a part of the community history of Fort Lauderdale! Bring in a favorite photo, document or memento to Fort Lauderdale Historical Society’s Centennial Storytelling Finale, taking place on Sunday, June 5 from noon to 5 p.m., and add your story to this historical timeline. Free and open to the public. RSVP requested.
“Heathers The Musical,” on stage at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts from Thursday, June 9–Sunday, June 26, is based on the classic 1989 film. This hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal new musical relives one of the greatest teen comedies of all time. Performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. $45 per ticket.
View beautiful orchids during Bonnet House Museum & Gardens’ Orchid Greenhouse Tours, Tuesday, June 14 from 11 a.m.–noon. Be inspired by the house’s three grow areas holding approximately 1,500 orchids. Pre-registration required. $20 per person.
On Thursday, June 16 from 6–8 p.m., sip on delightful wines and sangria and savor small bites at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s Art of Wine and Food Series’ “Wines with Wings.” Caitlin Bailey from Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits will lead the tasting. Guests are invited to view the Museum’s exhibition starting at 5 p.m. $40; $25 for members at Patron level and above. RSVP required.
Take a trip down memory lane at the Monday, June 20 Stranahan Stories: Moving History with Sandy Casteel. Free and open to the public, the event will take place at noon at the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club. Casteel, a Fort Lauderdale resident and community leader for over 50 years, will give a firsthand account of the details of how the King-Cromartie House moved down the New River in the 1970s. All attendees can enjoy 2-for-1 guided tours that day at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
