While June is a time of dads, grads, and brides and grooms, the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District is pleased to present an array of activities, geared to allow you to take time out and simply chill out and enjoy the beginning of summer. Whether you would like to take in some wine and food, a comedy show, summer art or more, The District is offering unlimited events this month, perfect to kick off your summer.
On Thursday, June 1, enter the fun of summertime grilling and sipping at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s Art of Wine & Food Series’ “Just for the Grill of It.” Taking place from 6–8 p.m., the interactive and lively event will feature Justin Molis from Pali Wine Company. $40 per person.
“The Great Native American Art Sale” will set the scene at the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society on Sunday, June 4 from noon–2 p.m. “The Big Show,” a free event, will close with a talk on the importance of collecting authentic, contemporary Native American art. Elgin Jumper and friends will present a frank and enduring community conversation and closing reception.
An original comedy that showcases the honor, truth, humor and silliness of being female, “Girls Only: The Secret Comedy of Women” will take the stage from Wednesday, June 14 through Sunday, June 25 at 8 p.m., at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The show, which features a two-woman cast, takes a look at all things girly. $35–$45 per person.
Admiring art is a soothing way to enjoy summer, and the Summer Art Series, presented by Bonnet House Museum & Gardens at Frame ‘n Art by the Sea, presents four exhibitions with works of various media including watercolor, oil, acrylic and photography. On view Thursday, June 15–Thursday, July 20 from 10:30 a.m.–5 p.m. (closed Sundays and Mondays), the series features free admission. A percentage of all art sale proceeds will benefit Bonnet House and its programs. Opening receptions will take place the first day of each exhibition from 5:30–7 p.m.
As always, the Guided House Tours of Historic Stranahan House Museum are a treat not to be missed. Offered daily in June at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., the guided docent tours explore Fort Lauderdale’s history, family traditions and general folklore of the time when this charming historic home was in its heyday. $12 for adults; $11 for seniors; $7 for students.
A great way to discover the art, history and charm of Fort Lauderdale via water are The District’s Waterful Tours, available through Oct. 29. Pick two of three premier cultural sites; enjoy one all-day hop on, hop off Water Taxi pass; receive a savings book from Galleria Mall; and much more at a 42 percent savings off regular pricing. $38 per adult; $20 per child aged 6–12; free for children 5 and under.
