Everyone knows Dr. Ruth Westheimer from her career as a pioneering radio and television sex therapist. Few, however, know the incredible journey that preceded it. From fleeing the Nazis in the Kindertransport and joining the Haganah in Jerusalem as a scout and sniper, to her struggles to succeed as a single mother coming to America, Becoming Dr. Ruth is filled with the humor, honesty and life-affirming spirit of Karola Ruth Siegel, the girl who became “Dr. Ruth,” America’s most famous sex therapist.
Debra Jo Rupp (Dr. Ruth) has made over 300 television appearances and is probably best known for her role as the hilarious and beloved mom ‘Kitty Forman’ in the long running FOX comedy series “That 70’s Show.” For the past five years Debra Jo has lived on the east coast getting back to her theater roots. She most recently starred in the one-woman show, Becoming Dr. Ruth, which ran through July 14, 2013 at TheateWorks in Hartford, CT. In an earlier version of the play last year titled Dr. Ruth, All the Way, Debra Jo debuted to sold-out performances at the Barrington Stage’s Stage 2 in Pittsfield, MA June 30-July 21, 2012, followed by a successful return engagement September 19-October 7, 2012. The play is penned by Mark St. Germain (“Freud’s Last Session”) and helmed by Julianne Boyd.
