September not only marks the beginning of autumn, but also the dawn of a new cultural season for arts and entertainment at Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District. From a performance by the iconic Tony Bennet at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, to birding classes at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, to a lecture on Latin American art at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, there are many exciting events, ideal for local residents or visitors, to enjoy at The District this month. The legendary Tony Bennett will perform at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. The winner of 17 GRAMMY Awards®, and the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award, Bennet will perform songs from his incredible repertoire of American classics and pop standards. $50–$70 per ticket.
On Sunday, Sept. 10, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens will be the scene of a Birding Class from 2–5 p.m. Attendees will look for raptors heading down the Fort Lauderdale coastline as they fly to their winter destinations, as well as learn how to identify the main groups of raptors: buteos, accipiters, falcons, harriers, osprey, eagles, kites and vultures. $25 per person.
It’s a free day at History Museum Fort Lauderdale! Smithsonian magazine Museum Day Live! will take place at the History Museum Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, Sept. 23, starting at noon. This annual event, hosted by Smithsonian magazine, includes participating museums across the nation, which open for free to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket. The day will kick off with an autumnal equinox ceremony at noon, followed by guided museum tours at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m., at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, anthropologist and curator Manuel Jordan will share stories of his journeys to Africa with artist José Bedia. This Annual Stanley and Pearl Goodman Lecture on Latin American Art: “My Travels with Jose Bedia,” is free for museum members; $12 for non-members; advance reservations required.
