It’s the perfect month to ask “Mother May I … treat you to the Haute Lauderdale Girlfriends Getaway package?” Or, “Mother May I … ask you to join me some fantastic gospel, soul and contemporary music?” During May, The District is not only a great place to celebrate moms, but also enjoy great tunes, wine, art and more! Following are just a few of the exciting events being presented in The District this month:

A delightful, chic getaway for all women, including moms, is the Haute Lauderdale Girlfriends Getaway Package, offered now through June 19. Including a stay at the Riverside Hotel on trendy Las Olas Blvd., fashion-focused art at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, delectable cuisine and beverages, lots of shopping, and much more, the package provides the perfect chance for girlfriends to make wonderful memories while enjoying the best of Fort Lauderdale style. Rates start at $154 per room, per night, based on double occupancy (depending on available occupancy and date selected).

A fun-filled adventure is the Escape to The District Package, which features the Flummox’d Escape Rooms — the newest wave of entertainment; plus admission to the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, a discount at the Historical Society’s gift shop, a 15 percent discount at PizzaCraft Artisan Pizzeria, and more! It’s available through Sept. 30, 2016 for only $32 per person.

On Wednesday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m., music legends Mavis Staples and The Blind Boys of Alabama will take the stage at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Mavis Staples has woven herself into the very fabric of gospel, soul, folk, pop, R&B, blues, rock, and hip hop over the last 60 years. Multiple GRAMMY® Award-winners and Gospel Hall of Famers The Blind Boys of Alabama cross multiple musical boundaries from traditional gospel favorites to contemporary spiritual songs.

For those who love fishing, master storyteller and Florida fishing historian Steve Kantner will present his lecture Fishing South Florida at the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society on Monday, May 9 from 6–7:30 p.m. This event, which is free and open to the public, will offer a look at the historic significance the fishing industry has had on the development of Fort Lauderdale as we know it today.

Pick a peck of what? At NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, May 19 from 6–8 p.m., wine lovers can enjoy the Art of Wine and Food Series: Pick a Peck of Pinots. Justin David Molis from Pali Wine Company will lead the tasting, featuring Pinots from California and small bites. Guests are invited to view the Museum’s exhibitions starting at 5 p.m. Limited seating; paid reservations required.

Ideal for beginner to advanced artists, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens’ Drawing Workshop on May 26 and 27 from 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. is a wonderful treat. Taking place on the beautiful Bonnet House estate, the workshop will help to develop the inner artist utilizing breathtaking flora and fauna.
