From the world-famous musical “Annie” to mystical beings, we at Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District are “just thinkin’ about” October and the great cultural opportunities we’re offering this month.
Saturday, October 4 is the last Cool Saturday of 2014 at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens … it’s an event not to miss! From 9 a.m.–4 p.m., visitors enjoy a tour of this historic estate at a discounted rate ($10 for adults and free for kids and under).
From family arts & crafts with giant puppets to a Mariachi performance and mask-making station, Fort Lauderdale Historical Society’s free Day of the Dead “Ofrendas” exhibit opening/celebration on Sunday, October 5 from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. at the New River Inn Museum of History will be a treat for the entire family. “Ofrendas,” an exhibit in partnership with local artist Jim Hammond, managing director/CEO of the Puppet Network, will be on view at the New River Inn through Nov. 2, marking Fort Lauderdale Historical Society’s highly anticipated Day of the Dead celebration.
From Tuesday, Oct. 7–Sunday, Oct. 19, one of the world’s best-loved musicals, “Annie,” returning in time-honored form, will be playing at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin and choreographed by Liza Gennaro, this production of “Annie” is a brand-new incarnation of the iconic original. With unforgettable songs such as “Tomorrow,” “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “Easy Street” and “I Don’t Need Anything But You,” the production features book and score by Tony Award®-winners Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin.
Art galleries, museums and art organization will host an interactive evening showcasing Fort Lauderdale’s growing contemporary art venues, artists and neighborhoods during the Saturday, Oct. 18 Art Fallout community event, starting at 5 p.m. Attendees can park their car at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, and ride NSU’s Shark Shuttle to each venue. Reservations required.
Spirits are lurking throughout the Historic Stranahan House Museum and on the New River, and the Spirits of Fort Lauderdale tour will introduce guests to them all! The special Halloween-themed tours will take guests back in time to experience a Victorian home funeral and burial, and a boat ride on the New River. Tours will take place Oct. 24, 25, 26, 29, 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. Advance registration required.
At Riverwalk A&E District, two things are for sure in October: “the sun’ll come out” and the nights will be filled with spirits. Whichever you prefer, experience the great culture the District has to offer.
