Creative writer and cultural studies scholar Dr. Andrea Shaw will read an excerpt from the manuscript of her new magical realist novel, tentatively titled “The Ministry of Other Things.” Set in Jamaica amidst the turmoil that ensued after the United States demanded the extradition of an alleged Jamaican drug lord, “The Ministry of Other Things” is a story about a woman’s desperate struggle to find her boyfriend, who goes missing after his inner city community of Tivoli Gardens is raided by the Jamaican police and military. The novel is a story about love, class, and madness, all entangled in a web of the fantastic as events unfold in the aftermath of a national tragedy. The reading will be accompanied by a short lecture on the historical function of black magico-religious practices in the New World. Free with museum admission. Free for members and NSU students and faculty.
