Ah … exquisite drinks and description before an exquisite opera. Those who purchase tickets to Florida Grand Opera’s Saturday, Dec. 2 performance of “Lucia di Lammermoor” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts have the option to participate in “Engaging the Senses” at 6:15 p.m. at the JM Family Studio Theater, before the show. Florida Grand Opera’s Justin Moss will give a summary of the opera, and Broward Center Arts Ambassador Lyn Farmer will give a sense of the opera’s context by emphasizing the Scottish culture, with some complimentary Scottish drinks. Free for those with a “Lucia di Lammermoor” ticket.

After “Engaging the Senses” on Saturday, Dec. 2, guests will enjoy Florida Grand Opera’s performance of “Lucia di Lammermoor” at 7:30 p.m. at Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Donizetti’s great opera is a bel canto classic based on a novel by Sir Walter Scott, and is an acting and musical tour de force. This haunting, atmospheric opera amazes with crumbling castles and ghostly apparitions. $21–$200 per ticket.

The holiday season is a wonderful time to explore beautiful plants, trees and more at the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens! The Saturday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, Dec. 3 Orchid Festival, taking place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., will include the 11th Annual Orchid & Exotic Plant Sale, as well as edible bites, libations, garden art, lectures, orchid displays, a farmer’s market and much more. $12–$15 per person. Children 12 and under are free.

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale presents its monthly Art of Wine and Food Series on Thursday Dec. 7 from 6–8 p.m. December’s theme is “Light Up the Holidays,” and will feature Gretchen Erpenbach from Ferrari-Carano Vineyards & Winery, who will present four varietals of wine and small bites to pair with each.

From Saturday, Dec. 9 through Thursday, Dec. 14, the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens will be the scene of Holiday Magic and the Festival of Trees! Each night from 5:30–8:30 p.m., guests will enjoy various holiday entertainment (including Santa and his elves, Christmas storytelling and strolling carolers), as well as the beauty of Bonnet House’s 45 lit and designed trees and wreaths. $15–$20 for adults, $5 for kids aged 6–12, and free for kids under 6.

A wonderful treat for the whole family is a performance of “The Secret Garden,” on stage at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Thursday, Dec. 14–Sunday, Dec. 31 (matinee and evening performances). The Tony Award®-winning enchanting classic of children’s literature is performed in brilliant musical style. It tells the story of orphaned 11-year-old Mary Lennox, who discovers a magic garden which beckons with haunting melodies and the “Dreamers,” spirits from Mary’s past who guide her through her new life. $47–$60 per ticket.

Historic Stranahan House Museum’s Monday, Dec. 18–Saturday, Dec. 23 Victorian Christmas and Holiday River Tours are memorable holiday events not to miss! Everyone is invited to cruise on down the river during the Thursday, Dec. 21 Winter Solstice Cruise, presented by Fort Lauderdale Historical Society.
