May is Flowering with Cultural Opportunities at The District!

From Segway tours to a Mother’s Day brunch special at Marti’s New River Bistro to “War Horses,” cultural fun is in full bloom at the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District in May. Whether you’re a local or a Fort Lauderdale visitor, The District is blossoming with endless activities for a variety of ages and interests. Here are just a few:

Discover the wonders of electricity during “Doktor Kaboom’s Live Wire! Electricity Tour,” on stage Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Parker Playhouse. This original interactive science comedy show creatively blends theater arts with the wonders of scientific exploration. Co-commissioned by The Kennedy Center, the show features sidesplitting adventures of science experiments designed to involve, excite, educate and entertain.

Are you a fluent Spanish speaker, or just looking to brush up on your high school Spanish? Either way, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens’ Spanish Language Tour on Saturday, May 9 from 10–11:30 a.m. is the perfect place for you! The Spanish Language Tour is offered the second Saturday of every month in groups of 15 to allow for questions and discussion. Reservations can be booked at

Looking for a new way to discover Fort Lauderdale AND learn about its storied history? Jump on a Segway with the Heart of Fort Lauderdale Segway Tour, offered every Saturday and Sunday beginning May 9 and 10 from 9–10:30 a.m. Segways are fun and easy to use, and a Segway Fort Lauderdale representative will train you in no time to ride one. The 1½-hour tour includes fun facts and stories of a bygone era, as well as many scenic spots ideal for photo taking, including Historic Stranahan House, mid-century modern architectural highlights, the Cooley Massacre site and more. After the ride, keep learning about Fort Lauderdale’s history during the included self-guided or docent tour of the Fort Lauderdale History Center campus and Historic New River Inn. What better way is there to treat mom than with a delicious brunch overlooking the beautiful New River? On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m., Marti’s New River Bistro at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts will treat moms to a complimentary mimosa to help celebrate their special day. Marti’s offers modern American cuisine with indoor and outdoor seating, and spectacular views. Its delightful weekend brunch features inspired new takes on traditional favorites such as Nutella French toast and a Bistro BLT with candied bacon, crisp potato cakes topped with smoked salmon and lemon yogurt whip, jumbo lump crab cake eggs Benedict and southern fried chicken and maple waffles, as well as eggs and omelets made to order. Marti’s is open for brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. While reservations are encouraged, walk ups are welcome. For reservations, call 954-660-6333 or book on OpenTable.

Even in May, the spirits are waiting for you! Historic Stranahan House Museum and Water Taxi are presenting River Ghost Tours on Sundays, May 3, 24 and 31 at 7:30 p.m., weather permitting. Enjoy this hour-long tour, which includes a visit inside Stranahan House and a boat ride on the New River. The cost is $25 per person and reservations are required at 954-524-4736. The tours are also offered as a private event for 10 or more people.

If you’re looking for a unique art exhibition, the first museum exhibition to focus on the Danish avant-garde group Helhesten (The Hell-Horse), “War Horses: Helhesten and the Danish Avant-Garde During WWII” will be on view starting Sunday, May 17 at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. It includes 120 paintings, works on paper and sculptures by artists such as Ejler Bille (1910–2004), Henry Herrup (1907–1983), Asger Jorn (1914–1973), Carl-Henning Pedersen (1913–2007) and others.
