Fort Lauderdale’s FEC Passenger Station Exhibit
Date:
April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013
Location:
Fort Lauderdale Historical Society
Address:
United States
Description:
This new exhibition allows guests to take a quick look at Florida East Coast passenger service in Fort Lauderdale and investigates the importance of the passenger station to the growth of the town. For most of its inhabited history, the New River has been difficult to access. Tropical foliage and the Everglades made traveling south over land slow and tedious. When the first Florida East Coast train arrived at the north bank of the New River in 1896, Fort Lauderdale finally had a reliable, efficient connection to the rest of the country. For nearly 50 years, Fort Lauderdale’s FEC Passenger Station – once situated directly across from the New River Inn – welcomed tens of thousands of people to Fort Lauderdale.

Warhol and Cars: American Icons
Date:
November 10, 2012 to February 10, 2013
Address:
United States
Description:
This is the first exhibition to examine Andy Warhol’s enduring fascination with automobiles as products of American consumer society. Featuring more than forty drawings, paintings, prints, photographs and related archival material spanning the years 1946 to 1986, the exhibition traces the development of Warhol’s work with cars throughout his career. Warhol’s images, which have become icons of American contemporary art, include an array of familiar products, like Coca-Cola and Campbell’s Soup cans. Automobiles were another, though lesser-known focus of his artistic interests. Organized by New Jersey’s Montclair Art Museum and drawn extensively from the collections of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue that is available at our own Books & Books in the Museum lobby.

January 13, 2013 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Location:

Description:
He’s played with everyone and toured everywhere.  Born in Philadelphia in 1945 “as a kid I listened to rock ’n’ roll and whatever else was on the radio,” says Bromberg. He began studying guitar when he was 13 and later enrolled in Columbia University. Greenwich Village in the mid-’60s drew David to the downtown clubs and coffeehouses, where he could watch and learn from the best, such as his inspiration and teacher, the Reverend Gary Davis. Bromberg’s approach to guitar-playing earned him jobs playing the Village “basket houses”. He later became a first-call, “hired gun” guitarist for recording sessions, ultimately playing on hundreds of records by artists including Bob Dylan (New Morning, Self Portrait, Dylan), Link Wray, The Eagles, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, and Carly Simon. A wildly successful solo spot at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival in Great Britain led to his 1971 Columbia Records debut which included “The Holdup,” a songwriting collaboration with former Beatle George Harrison. David also met the Grateful Dead and wound up with four of their members, including Jerry Garcia, playing on his next two albums. David emerged from a recording hiatus of 17 years with the solo, acoustic, traditional folk-blues album Try Me One More Time (Appleseed, 2007) which was rewarded with a Grammy nomination. For his 2011 follow-up album, Use Me, Bromberg chose a different approach, asking some of his favorite singer-songwriters and musicians to write (or choose), produce, and perform on songs tailored to his versatile skills as a guitarist and vocalist. Answering David’s call were well-known artists John Hiatt, Dr. John, Widespread Panic, Levon Helm, Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, VinceGill, Tim O’Brien & Keb’ Mo’ and the super successful record production team the Butcher Bros.
