Fabulous Forties on the Avenue Exhibit is a tribute to the accomplishments and business achievements of the African-American community in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during the late 1940s. In celebration of the Fort Lauderdale Centennial and Broward County African-American Research Library and Cultural Center’s upcoming 10th year anniversary, the library pays a historic tribute to Fort Lauderdale in our museum gallery with an iconic stretch of road that was the commerce hub of the community, namely Northwest 5th Avenue in the late 1940’s. This year-long exhibit will include the latest in mobile applications technology, allowing both young and old to access the historical materials through a series of interactive kiosks. These kiosks will allow visitors to create a fun video of their gallery experience and download the video to their email, Facebook or other social media outlets.

Demons, beasts, gods and ghosts are the subjects of this mid-century career retrospective of the work of Panamanian-based artist Isabel De Obaldía. The exhibition’s nearly one hundred works include approximately twenty paintings and drawings by the artist along with about eighty of her sculptures in glass.

This new exhibition allows guests to take a quick look at Florida East Coast passenger service in Fort Lauderdale and investigates the importance of the passenger station to the growth of the town. For most of its inhabited history, the New River has been difficult to access. Tropical foliage and the Everglades made traveling south over land slow and tedious. When the first Florida East Coast train arrived at the north bank of the New River in 1896, Fort Lauderdale finally had a reliable, efficient connection to the rest of the country. For nearly 50 years, Fort Lauderdale’s FEC Passenger Station – once situated directly across from the New River Inn – welcomed tens of thousands of people to Fort Lauderdale.

Docent-led tours of the 1907 King-Cromartie House are available with paid admission to the History Center. The house is furnished as it might have looked in 1915 and provides a fascinating look at “pioneer life” in early Fort Lauderdale. An exhibit gallery on the first floor of the King-Cromartie House teaches visitors the history of the King family as well as the Junior League’s crucial role in saving this building from destruction in the early 1970s. The exhibit includes interactive question-and-answer components. It also displays photographs of the house as it was barged up the New River to its current location.
