Florida Grand Opera presents Roméo et Juliette
Broward Center
Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 PM and Saturday, May 12 at 8:00 PM
Florida Grand Opera is proud to present an exciting production of a classic tale—Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette—appearing at the Broward Center on May 10 & 12, 2012. Directed by David Lefkowich, this production employs innovative light projection and multi-unit sets to drive the emotion behind the timeless tale of star-crossed lovers. Lefkowich consulted the libretto, pulling from it fire and water imagery that complements the mood of each scene. For instance, light projections reflecting fire ignite during the first duet between the lovers at the Capulet ball, followed by cooling reflections of water in the balcony scene. Coupled with a three-unit facade, the light projections and set work in unison to produce images and ideas. This backdrop allows the singers to truly shine by creating grandeur through simplicity.
Begin your evening with Serenade, a delicious pre-show dining experience at the Broward Center prepared by a fabulous culinary staff in the beautiful Abdo New River Room. The delightful menu includes mouth-watering entrees such as beef tenderloin and Chilean sea bass, coupled with a signature house salad and chef’s choice dessert. Enjoy this delectable feast while being entertained by a talented wait staff performing the best of Broadway and selections from the Great American Songbook. Appetizers and a full bar are also available to complete your experience, and once finished, you’re only steps away from your seat to the evening’s performance. |

Fort Lauderdale’s FEC
Passenger Station Exhibition
Fort Lauderdale History Center
Throughout May |

|
This new exhibition allows guests to take a quick look at Florida East Coast passenger service in Fort Lauderdale and investigates the importance of the passenger station to the growth of the town. For most of its inhabited history, the New River has been difficult to access. Tropical foliage and the Everglades made traveling south over land slow and tedious. When the first Florida East Coast train arrived at the north bank of the New River in 1896, Fort Lauderdale finally had a reliable, efficient connection to the rest of the country. For nearly 50 years, Fort Lauderdale’s FEC Passenger Station—once situated directly across from the New River Inn—welcomed tens of thousands of people to Fort Lauderdale.
