Dip Into Cool Cultural Offerings at The District in August!

If you’re feeling the heat from the dog days of summer, Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District is offering many cool cultural events and activities in August. From a delightful evening summer social cruise presented by Historic Stranahan House Museum to “Hippiefest 2015” at Broward Center for the Performing Arts, The District is pleased to present many fun-filled cultural opportunities this month. Following are just a few:

Check out Cool Saturdays at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, the first Saturday of each month through October. On Saturday, Aug. 1 from 9 a.m.–4 p.m., guests can take a tour of this one-of-a-kind historic home and enjoy special summer pricing: only $10 for adults, a 50 percent discount off regular pricing; and free for kids 12 and under – a $16 value! Tours of this magnificent estate begin at 9:30 a.m. with the last tour scheduled at 3:30 p.m.

Spend your summer Thursday evenings taking in spectacular art at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s Summer Starry Nights. Every Thursday through Sept. 3, the Museum is offering free admission from 4:30–8 p.m. During these times, visitors can enjoy exhibitions, lectures and films, along with two-for-one wine and beer specials along with a light tapas menu in the Museum Café.

Who doesn’t love a relaxing summer evening on the water? On Friday, Aug. 7 from 6–8:30 p.m., Historic Stranahan House Museum will present its Riverwalk Summer Social Cruise. Guests will board the iconic riverboat Liberty Belle for a delightful cruise including an open bar, food and music; benefiting the Historic Stranahan House. Embarkation is from Pier 66 is at 2301 Southeast 17th Street. Admission is $40 per person. Tickets can be purchased online at

Learn about the fascinating history of Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades on Monday, Aug. 10 from 6–8 p.m. The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, New River Inn is hosting a lecture titled “The History of Port Everglades,” featuring Ellen Kennedy and Robert Flint. Port Everglades is one of South Florida’s leading economic powerhouses, and has transitioned into one of the largest cruise ports in the world. The lecture is free and open to the public.

If you love Woodstock, you can’t miss Hippiefest 2015, showcasing the peace, love and music that changed a generation. It’s on stage at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, Aug. 14 at 7:30 p.m. This 3½-hour concert extravaganza highlights the best of the memorable hippie era, including The Family Stone, original founding members and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame icons Jerry Martini, Cynthia Robinson and Greg Errico; as well as Phunne Stone, daughter of Sly Stone and Cynthia Robinson. The star-studded lineup includes Rick Derringer, famous for “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and “All American Boy”; Mitch Rider & the Detroit Wheels, known for the classics “Devil with a Blue Dress On” and “Sock it to Me, Baby!”; and Badfinger featuring Joey Molland, with hits like “Baby Blue” and “Without You.” The concert takes place on the exact weekend of the historic Woodstock concert.

So whether by land, by sea, or by taking a trip back in time to the Woodstock era, get out of the heat and enjoy all that The District has to offer in August!
