Even though April is known for its spring showers that bring flowers, at the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District, this month is marked by “Ghosts,” a time-honored opera, music under the stars, mid-century architecture and many more cultural wonders. Here’s a sampling of what’s happening at the Riverwalk A&E District this month:

As for supernatural beings, Broadway Across America and the Broward Center present “Ghost the Musical,” Tuesday, April 29–Sunday, May 11 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Guests are transported to the afterlife with mesmerizing special effects during this brand-new Broadway musical based on the Oscar®-winning movie “Ghost.” Tickets start at just $34.50.

The mystical River Ghost Tours, presented by Historic Stranahan House Museum and Water Taxi will be an unearthly treat on Sundays, April 6 and 27, weather permitting at 7:30 p.m. The hour-long tour, including a visit inside Stranahan House and a boat ride on the New River, includes fascinating stories of spirits. Reservations are required at (954) 524-4736; the cost is $25 a person. Tours are also available as a private event for a group of 10 or more people.

Florida Grand Opera brings the 114-year-old opera fan favorite “Tosca” to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, April 10 and Saturday, April 12, both evenings at 7:30 p.m. Set in Rome in June 1800, with the Kingdom of Naples’ control of Rome threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy, Puccini’s “Tosca” tells the love story between famous opera singer Floria Tosca and painter/political activist Mario Cavaradossi. The results are bloody, deadly and shocking. “Tosca” includes some of the most inspired and memorable music in all of opera. Ticket prices start at $21.

Attendees can beat the traffic and get the most out of “Tosca” with the popular, free opera preview, one hour before the performance in the theater. The witty and captivating Justin Moss will tell the inside story of “Tosca.” After the performance, guests can stay for an informative, free Q&A session hosted by Florida Grand Opera’s General Director Susan T. Danis, members of the senior staff and other members of the artistic staff.

The beautiful estate of the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is the perfect setting for the Thursday, April 10, 7–9 p.m. Concert Under the Stars. Featuring the Florida Grand Opera, the concert will include wine, dessert and coffee. Taking place in and around the Bonnet House estate, the concert will be performed on the veranda lawn, with the moon and stars above. Individual tickets are $30.

Those who have wondered how Fort Lauderdale’s post-WWII modern architecture came to be will enjoy the free lecture “Fort Lauderdale’s Mid-Century Modern Architecture” on Monday, April 14, 6 p.m. with Merrilyn Rathbun. Taking place at the New River Inn/Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, the lecture will include a brief illustrated history of the architecture, and an introduction to the architects and developers that made the mid-century boom happen.

April is also a great month to take in some beautiful works of art, and on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6, Bank of America cardholders will enjoy free admission to Nova Southeastern University’s Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale! Through Bank of America’s Museums on Us® program, guests enjoy free admission to the museum the first weekend of each month.

Who says April is just about spring showers? Riverwalk A&E District partners are making the beauty of spring even better with these and many more cultural opportunities.
